Possible Public Safety Referendum – Fire Department

The Fire Department is requesting funding through the possible referendum to address operational challenges caused by increasing call volumes and staffing levels that fall short of national standards. These requests are based on steady growth in EMS incidents, the need to reduce reliance on outside agencies, and the goal of maintaining safe and timely emergency response for the community.

What’s Being Requested

  • 12 Additional Firefighters/Paramedics
    • Six to Station 9
    • Six to Station 7
    • To meet NFPA 1710 standards
    • These positions will ensure full staffing at stations 7 and 9

Why These Requests Matter

Key Statistics:
  • Emergency call volume has grown steadily, with EMS incidents driving the largest increase.
  • Current staffing levels fall short of NFPA 1710 standards, impacting response times and operational safety.
  • Dependence on outside agencies for auto-aid and mutual aid is increasing, which can delay service to New Berlin residents.
  • Upcoming retirements and leadership vacancies require a succession plan to maintain seamless operations.
