Crash Responder Safety Week
Whereas, Crash Responder Safety Week is set aside each year to recognize the often lifesaving work of our crash responders; and
Whereas at every crash scene, emergency responders – representing fire, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and towing and transportation services – are at risk of being struck and injured, or even killed, in a secondary crash; and
Whereas, each driver has a responsibility to drive safely and take every precaution to reduce the risk of secondary crashes, which includes following the state’s Move Over Law, designed to provide a safety zone for workers on the side of roadways; and
Whereas, emergency responders throughout Wisconsin respond to approximately 128,000 traffic crashes each year; and
Whereas in 2023 the City of New Berlin’s emergency responders responded to approximately 671 traffic crashes which included 164 injuries and 1 fatality; and
Whereas, the City of New Berlin joins the Wisconsin Department of Transportation: recognizing a need for public awareness and acknowledgement that we are all responsible for preventing secondary crashes that endanger the lives of our dedicated emergency personnel.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Dave Ament, Mayor of the fine City of New Berlin, do hereby proclaim November 18th through 22nd, 2024 as:
“CRASH RESPONDERS SAFETY WEEK”
